RSS Feeds
RSS to reach a wider range of audiencesThe ability to embed an RSS feed into different sites allows to distribute alerts more rapidy. For example, "on the internet, it is difficult to predict where people will look for confirmation. The integrated RSS feed of the Autonomous Public Emergency Warning System (APECS) means local councils, surf clubs, volunteer service organisations, etc. can always display the latest alerts relevant to their geographic area. This means people looking to their local surf club or council web site for confirmation of a tsunami are more likely to find it, and therefore more likely to be able to take action." (Source) RSS as an authoritative sourceBecuase RSS feeds are associated with a web address, RSS feeds can also serve to distribute official alert messages from government (e.g., if the feed has a .gov address). For example, the National Weather Service makes available its weather alerts via RSS.How-toThe video RSS in plain English provides a great introduction in how a RSS feed works. |
